Foreclosures are posing tough challenges before the Church. People are not contributing as much as before, people are expecting more help from the Church and all the while the Church has to see that its own lights are burning bright.
In Grace Point Church, North Las Vegas, the mood is grim. The casino and construction worlds have been badly hit by foreclosures and the economic slump, The church’s weekly giving had gone down by 20%. Devin Hudson is a new generation preacher in jeans and T-shirt. He is determined to stick to high goals and is ever eager to sign a personal cheque with high figures.
The church comprising of 800 members has rushed past its of goal of $35,000 by $5,000. It is something to crow about during these days of recession. The entire amount is used to feed the hungry in this area apart from other causes outside the walls of the church.
Hudson was full of hope when he said, “It builds a lot of trust when I say that I realize where we’re at economically, and we can either cower in fear or stand out in faith. As tempting as it is to roll that money into our budget from last year, God blesses the mentality of giving it away.”
The end of the year is usually the time for giving. Many churches say that special collection drives far exceeded hopes. But it is yet to be calculated whether this will meet all the ends. Difficult decisions loom before the church as the recession continues.
Allen Walworth of Generis advises that the more the churches give the more will be their support banks. He said, “If a church just seems to be serving itself and protecting itself, it’s going to fall off pretty quickly when people are making their own hard choices.” Generis based in Atlanta, gives advice to churches regarding fund raising.
Leadership Network is an organization linking churches. Dave Travis from this body says that churches are now taking an innovate approach to address the problems of the age. Special collection drives are undertaken. Despite that the churches itself are suffering because of the general mood of the economy. He compared the problem to a double-edged sword and said, “Church leaders kind of fear that. On the other hand, the more you can make tangible the ministry of the church in the local community, the more people will give to that cause.”
