Repo houses numbers are pouring in. But the housing crisis is not merely about impersonal numbers. Behind each digit is a tale of woe and tears.
The story of Mary Adamson and her brush with foreclosure is just one of the many true stories – the stuff out of which a novel can be written. In 2000 Mary was surprised when suddenly her husband decided on buying a house. At that time she was 48 years old. In August 2000 the couple purchased a Cape style house in the Hyde Park locality of Boston. They moved into the three bed roomed dream house with the last of their five children.
In 2001 spring Mary’s husband had to be hospitalized due to acute back pain. Towards the end of April Mary got news from the hospital that he was dying. A week later death followed. He had never let anybody know that he had lung cancer.
Immediately after the tragedy Mary continued to manage her affairs satisfactorily and she lived without any fear from foreclosure. She worked in Boston Children’s Hospital as administrative assistant, paid bills from the money she got from life insurance and also spruced up the house making it more safe and secure. The wiring was redone, a new heater was added and the facing of the fireplace given a new look. Life buoyed up when she met her second husband Fred Adamson on 2002.
But foreclosure smiled from the background. Unexpected financial troubles began to knock as 2002 began to roll on. Fred got hurt and then Mary lost her job. It was next to impossible to get another job and Mary had to accept unemployment pay. It carried them through with the battle for survival as regards food and mobility. She did part time transcribing jobs and then began to dip into her retirement savings. Soon that ran out within a couple of months. It came as a shock to her when there was little food in the cabinet. Food stamps were denied to her, as she owned a house. She had to take help from the church.
From 2003 the banks began to bare its fangs with sharp foreclosure threats. Mary had fallen behind on their monthly $1,2335 mortgage payments. With both husband and wife being out of job the situation became impossible. Finally foreclosure had the last laugh as the family moved out with a black credit mark.
