North Hollywood Tenants Harassed by Foreclosures

Liset Herrera is one of the many tenants in an apartment building harassed by foreclosures. When the building came under foreclosure the bank instructed her not make any rental payments until the signing of a new contract. Six months afterwards the bank is throwing out each and every family in the fourplex where Herrera stays for non-payment of rent. The tenants claim that they did not receive copy of any new agreement.

Herrera hardly can speak English. Communicating through a translator clutching on to her 3 year old daughter she tearfully said, “I pleaded with the bank to give us a chance to pay the rent, to allow us to stay. I’ve pleaded with the bank to have a heart.”

Housing advocates converged in front of her shabby apartment as part of a protest being staged across the country protesting against unjust evictions and wanting more accountability from the lenders. It was alleged that despite federal measures to allow for modification of mortgages thousands of units are being swallowed up by foreclosures. It is mostly the poor families who are at the worst receiving end.

The uprooting of families is leading to children being taken away from familiar surroundings and schools. The repossessed properties are lying neglected without being maintained. Entire neighbourhoods have come under blight. Nativo Lopez of Mexican American Political Association of Los Angeles said, “President Obama’s plan is not working for California. Simply put, it’s not working for Arizona; it’s not working for Florida. It’s an infamy … these people are being evicted from their homes.”

The demonstrators waved placards reading “Stop Evictions Now”. They were strident in their call to the banks to allow the tenants to continue living in the foreclosed houses and to see to the maintenance of the same. They also demanded that banks grant credit to small entrepreneurs so that jobs among modest income communities are not lost.

Antonio Pizano of Valley Economic Development Center said, “We are concerned. We have particularly seen an impact to the owners of minority businesses, who have traditionally used their homes as collateral.”

The protests held across USA were staged by National Community Reinvestment Coalition – a group committed to the welfare of working class families. John Taylor of the coalition said in a statement, “As the bailout of the financial system continues, working families have been left behind.”

In May a federal law has been enacted. It stipulates that tenants of foreclosed houses be permitted to continue to stay for 90 days.
