A family from Aberdeen said on Sunday 30th November 2008 that their house has been saved from foreclosure thanks to rush of donations amounting to $10,917. Daniel Sampson senior said that after having raised the right amount they disabled the donation button of their web site.

The family had made a public appeal for help as foreclosure closed in on the house that was their home. Their appeal was put on the air on WBAL-TV News. 8th December was the deadline for payment of their mortgage dues. They would have had to raise that amount to put a halt on foreclosure proceedings.

Thousands are in the same boat as the Sampsons. But although their position was not unique the way they got help was definitely something quite out of the ordinary. A friend came up with this innovative way of raising money – get others to donate $1 for their assistance.

The family has had its quota of woes. Three-year-old Daniel Sampson was prematurely born that later led to disabilities. He has a two-year-old sister Elana, and both are preparing to welcome another sibling into their family in May. But if the lenders had their way, by that time there would not be a house to provide shelter to the growing family. Ebony Sampson kept her faith in God and prayed for help. She refused to believe that something disastrous would happen.

Daniel Sampson senior had lost his job in Bank of America last June and he had a difficult time finding alternative employment during these difficult days of the economic slump. Meanwhile there were expenses to be met at home like the car requiring a new engine. To add to the mayhem the medical bills of Daniel junior began to increase. Finally they found it impossible to be current on their mortgage payments. It came to a point when they realized that nothing was in their hands anymore.

Then the idea of the website came up. The family had always been active social workers in the community and now they sought help. In spite of their travails the Sampsons spent working at the church for Thanksgiving dinner for those who were less fortunate than them. By setting an example they wanted others to be inspired. Finally with luck and faith on their side they got through and the money to save them from foreclosure was raised before the deadline date.
