It is the dumb creatures who are at the receiving end – today pets are paying for the foreclosure follies of Man. The story of pets left behind in South Florida is one of the many happening all over the country.
Checking in a Boca Raton repossessed home , the agent found in the backyard two seven year old dogs purposefully left behind with the note saying that they could not take their pets. The note also contained the name of the vet. The mixed breed spaniel siblings were taken to the Tri County Humane Society kennel where adoption signs have been put up. The staff hopes that the two will be taken by one family because the dogs had been together since birth.
More and more pet stories are going on the rounds – the hidden victims of the foreclosure crises raging in South Florida and elsewhere. The animal welfare organizations are gearing up for a deluge of abandoned pets as the foreclosure crisis continues to huff and puff. The particular cause for worry are the older animals whose health costs, the falling economy can hardly cope with. It seems inevitable that when days are hard for Man, the pets too face hardship.
The Tri-County animal shelter can accommodate 350 animals. But calls are rising. Daily five to six are from those who can no longer look after their pet dogs and 40 calls are from owners wanting to surrender cats. Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League on West Palm Beach accepts animals referred to them by Tri-County. They have taken on another assignment – tracking the causes for abandonment of pets. According to their findings in the previous month 4 admitted to foreclosures, 56 said that they were shifting and 11 others commented failure to find accommodation where pets are allowed. The executive director of Peggy Adams, Joan Carlson, was bitter in commenting that many think animals are like old disposable pieces of furniture or television sets. But for many genuine animal lovers, the situation is heartrending – they have lived with and loved their animals for years. Many landlords do not permit renters with animals. In other instances the accommodation is too small to allow in Fido or Fluffy.
The animal shelter organizations are now trying to identify those people who are in real crisis with their pets and also endeavouring to convince landlords that pets can be allowed in on certain terms and conditions.
