This is something that cannot be counted in numbers and statistics – the tension and anxiety of children because of the foreclosure crisis. The advice is that adults should present a truthful picture to junior in a reassuring manner keeping in mind the age of the listener.
One of the many parents living through this Foreclosure Age is Kerri Reddick-Morgan who comes from a solid middle class background. The news of collapsing banks and markets has not spared her domestic life and she has had to soothe the nerves of her children and assure them that the world has not come unstuck. But Kamar who is ten is worried that another Great Depression is knocking and this might prevent him from having children when he grows up! Andrew is eighteen and he is extremely worried about not being able to pay college fees in the coming year. Kasie is twelve and worries whether her pocket money will vanish with her baby-sitting jobs. Her mother assured that since she did not have more than $100,000 in her account, she had nothing to fear. Kerrie had never imagined that one day she would have to hold this sort of a conversation with her twelve-year-old child.
There is no denying that the economy is stumbling – falling stocks, vanishing retirement and college savings and spiking foreclosures. The uncertainty of the times has trickled down from the adults to the juniors. A recent survey taken of 500 teenagers showed that nearly 70% were afraid of “immediate negative impact.” Research psychologist Michael Cohen commented that the percentage is alarming. The anxiety is not just about “society at large” but it was a personal fear for the self and the family. He said, “I was quite taken aback by the scope of that fear.” He explained that if fearful parents did not overcome their apprehensions and restore confidence in the youngsters then the latter would end up with headaches, stomach pains or lose interest in school and try to drop out. For others the effect might be more serious.
Another victim of the foreclosure times is fifteen-year-old Eduardo. His mother works as a domestic help and father is a carpenter. But those hire them have cut down on their spending and this is telling on their income. The result is that foreclosure is ready to take over their houses. Eduardo has given up his anti-allergy medicines and is now hunting around for a job.
Children not directly in the line of foreclosure attack are suffering anxiety and tension.
