Foreclosures are leading to an increase in number of abandoned pets in Northwest Arkansas. So it is not just Tom and Jane but Fido too is being affected by the economic slow down.
Animal shelters are bursting to the seams with abandoned animals. Foreclosures are playing a prime role but also included in the reasons are rising cost of living. It needs money to maintain pets.
On an average two to three calls are received by the Bella Vista Animal Shelter. Various reasons are cited. One caller said that money is the problem. Another couple referred to the breaking up of their marriage making it impossible to provide a home for the pet. The Bella Vista shelter resorts to euthanasia of animals only rarely. It can accommodate 150 animals at a pinch. The shelter tries to find good homes for the pets reaching out nationally to animal lovers.
Recently Bella Vista worked with a similar body based in Colorado to find adoptive homes for dogs. Bella Vista distributes information and photographs to allied organizations connected with pet rescue. The latest news was the transferring of 27 dogs from Bella Vista to Colorado. For transportation they take the help of Got Orphans based in Little Rock. The latter have converted a recreational vehicle for this animal welfare job. They have their own website giving out information about their activities.
The shelters also arrange for spaying and neutering operations at negligible expenses. This helps the residents to continue to keep their pets. Often they find puppy litters abandoned by the wayside. Donna Miles from Bella Vista commented that this is like living in the Dark Ages in Arkansas. She added, “Pet owners don’t consider their dog or the cat as part of the family.”
Many other shelters are reporting sharp increases in demand causing them to increase euthanasia procedures.
