Foreclosure Tale

It is a strange world – a landlord’s house is repossessed but the tenant too gets punished and has just one day to start marching bag and baggage. For the tenant is t the whole thing fell like a bolt from the blue without warning.

This is the sad tale of Alice and Marco Ramirez. Last summer they moved in to Fort Myers with six boys. They were reluctant to continue staying in Fort Myers fearing that the boys would have ended up being gangsters. Alice found a job and Marco too chugged along with temporary assignments working. Help came from the federal rent assistance and they could survive in this manner in their three bed roomed house.

But when the sudden bombshell fell they had to struggle late into Thursday night packing their bags and trying to find a shelter. They were given eviction orders for no fault of theirs. The house had been foreclosed and the court gave them till Thursday midnight to clear out. Somehow they tried to cramp in as much as they could in a truck. The rest, including the basket ball hoop of the boys, was left behind for the next trustee owners – the Deutsche Bank.

Repos were thus affecting all landlords and tenants. The Ramirez family case is however is exceptional because no one is usually given such short notice. The Sarasota Office of Housing and Community Development comments that in all probability the Ramirez family would get another subsidized housing accommodation in North Point. That did not lessen the trauma of the family. They had to borrow funds to park belongings in a storage unit. Nothing was left over for day to day expenses including food, lodging and seeking a new rented space. Well after sunset as the family continued to pack they did not know where to go within the next few hours.

Under normal circumstances the tenants get to know of the foreclosure weeks or even months in advance. But the case of the Ramirez family was exceptional. Jesse Campos, the landlord kept them in the dark. In fact he continued to assure them of the opposite as he continued to collect rent. Campos however kept on denying his role insisting that had he known about the finality of repo homes he would have warned them long ago.

Campos too is a victim of the foreclosure game.
