Foreclosure action is being taken against Hoala School in Wahiawa. The head of this private school, Nancy Barry is determined to keep the campus open. The lender alleges that the school has been late in making mortgage payments. The school had bought a parcel of land (2.2 acre) from the estate of one George Galbraith.
The Bank of Hawaii filed the foreclosure in the Circuit Court last Thursday. The bank claims that the school owes them $440,000. Due to further delay the amount increased to $591,785 at the time of filing. The attorney representing the bank could not be contacted.
The school lies surrounded by greenery at the end of a street. There are seven classrooms in these quiet idyllic surroundings. All total there are 50 students in pre-kindergarten, middle school and high school. The school now uses two buildings for its classrooms and offices. Previously these were used to house pineapple plantation workers. A few blocks away at Wahiawa Hongwanji Mission the school has another kindergarten section with 40 children.
The school that is facing home foreclosure today made its debut 22 years ago in a house that formerly belonged to the YMCA of Wahiawa. It is still hoping to bring the entire school under one roof. But enrolment has suddenly dropped by 25 since the last academic year said the officials. The foreclosure notice surprised the school authorities. They claim to have been negotiating with the bank about refinancing when this notice arrived suddenly.
Jef Fern is a teacher whose two children had graduated from Hoala. He said, “It’s a shock to have them go ahead and do this. We are a little school, and we are out in the country and it’s been touch for a while. But we have been holding our own.”
In a letter Nancy Barry informed the parents abut the situation but also reassured them that the school would continue to run as usual and would not shut down. The school officials did not permit the media from talking with the guardians regarding the impending foreclosure when they came to pick up their wards. Barry reiterated, “We are open, we are here and we are in the business of education.”
Foreclosures with its insatiable appetite have spared no unit – it has been threatening private houses as well as churches, educational institutions, theme parks, sports complexes, heritage buildings and residences of celebrities.

Ok first of all Bank of Hawaii is not the only one they owe money to. They owe over $800,000.00 to different people. Do not feel sorry for this school. This school has not only financially hurt many people, but due to their lack of quality teachers and administrators they have really hurt many children that attended this school, especially after 2005. They need to close this school down! We are very sad that that the school is still open, especially for the children that are attending this horrible school.
