Foreclosed Vacant Houses Breeding Grounds for Mosquitoes

The stagnant pools of foreclosed vacant houses are breeding grounds for disease spreading mosquitoes. The communities continue to be plagued by after effects of recession. According to RealtyTrac April 2009 reports government foreclosure numbers had increased by 32% across USA in comparison to the previous years. CNN reports that Arizona, California, Florida and Nevada continue to be leaders in the foreclosure race and are responsible for over half the foreclosures in April.

The foreclosure figures continue to dominate the scene while the NPMA (National Pest Management Association) has sent out warnings to residents to remain alert of the fear of disease spreading from the increased number of empty houses. These are all potentially breeding grounds for mosquitoes during summer – especially in those units having pools in their backyards.

Pools that have not been drained create ideal conditions of mosquitoes to multiply. Pools need to be maintained and treated regularly. If not, the possibility of mosquito menace increases significantly. In the normal course water collecting in flower pots and or in bird baths are happy hunting grounds for mosquitoes. A swimming pool deserted and swampy provides the best opportunity for the larvae to multiply. The mosquito story does not end in the foreclosed house – it respects no barriers and quickly spreads causing all round havoc.

Greg Baumann is a senior scientist with NPMA. He said, “Mosquitoes are not only a nuisance pest but also, a major health threat. While associated with causing itchy welts, these pests can also transmit West Nile virus (WNV). In fact, the Center for Disease Control reported that WNV resulted in more than 1,300 human cases and 44 fatalities across the U.S. in 2008. Awareness of conducive conditions for mosquito breeding, especially in and around foreclosed homes, is the key to preventing potential mosquito infestations and limiting WNV in 2009.”

Concerned residents worried about mosquitoes breeding in foreclosed estates should immediately get in touch with the local health officials. If mosquitoes are a problem on one’s own property then it is advisable to visit Pestworl.org on the Internet to know about what can be done to facilitate eradication and spread of the disease. There are also guidelines about how to contact a professional in the pest control line who will be able to locate the problem and work out effective remedies.

The NPMA is an organization (non-profit) with over 6,000 enlisted members. It made its debut as early as 1933 to give the required support to the pest control industry in its commitment to secure public health, food as well as property.
